Arthur Mitchell (March 27, 1934 – September 19, 2018) was the first black ballet dancer to achieve international stardom. In 1955, he was the first African-American dancer with the New York City Ballet, where he was promoted to principal dancer the following year and danced in major roles until 1966.  In 1969, he founded the first African-American classical ballet company, Dance Theatre of Harlem.  Among other awards, Mitchell recieved the Kennedy Center Honors in 1993.
When asked in
an interview
with The New York Times in January what he considered his greatest achievement, he said, “That I actually bucked society, and an art form that was three, four hundred years old, and brought black people into it.”  His dancing in just two roles created for him by
George Balanchine
ensured him a place in American ballet history.
